I get requests for maternity photos in flowers ALL the time–but this request was different. She wanted wildflower maternity photos, and she had something specific in mind.
Most of my clients choose one location over another simply because they want a pretty backdrop, which is a perfectly fine reason. But for these maternity photos, it had to be in a field of wildflowers.
She’s always imagined herself standing in a field of wildflowers for her maternity photos. Holding onto her pregnant belly, feeling tiny little kicks and another heart beating close to her own. She held onto that image in her mind as she held onto the hope that it would become real.
And now here they are standing in the field of her dreams. Only a few short weeks away from meeting the love of their lives.
For me, as the photographer, it’s important that I never forget that these are real moments, real memories, in addition to a photo session. This entire evening will become a core memory in their family’s journey.
I imagine you looking at these photos years and years from now and telling stories to each other and to your child. How one night in early July 2024, a few weeks before you gave birth, you wandered through a beautiful organic farm nestled in the Bristol Hills together at sunset for your maternity photos. You were led through a gate and into a giant field of wildflowers at the base of a steep hill and you had to make your own path through the tall grass. Maybe you’ll remember about how you actually forget the photographer was even there because you were so lost in the beauty of the moments.
You can still hear the sound of crickets and the song birds, and can feel the humid air on your skin.
Can you feel it?
A special thank you to our friends at Fruition Seeds in Naples, NY for inviting us to explore this stunning wildflower field adjacent to their farm. It couldn’t have been more perfect and we are so grateful!
Follow @Fruition_Seeds on Instagram if you’re not already! Everything they create is a love letter to the Haudenosaunee land we call home here in the Finger Lakes of NY–and to the human experience in general. They’re also in the midst of transitioning their traditional business model of selling seeds to a model of abundance by sharing seeds, which is so inspiring, motivating, and transformational. They wrote a blog about the transition and mission for the future, which I am still reading and processing: https://www.fruitionseeds.com/learn/blog/the-gift-of-fruition-an-invitation-to-embrace-change-together-and-trust-abundance-shared/
But even without knowing all of the details, I wouldn’t hesitate to support anything Fruition Seeds dreams up! I’ll be learning more about how I can support them moving forward. Perhaps my experience in community organizing can be helpful once more!
Seeds are gifts, indeed <3
